Hach Provides Photometer and Thermoreactor at Deep Discount, Enabling Total Phosphorus Testing

On 15 July, Mike Johhnson, Regional Sales Manager - Illinois for Hach, dropped off two new —- and long wished for —- pieces of equipment at Paul Spiewak’s home. Paul, Water Quality Lead for Lake County Lake Lovers, has been dreaming of Lake Lovers having the capacity to test for Total Phosphorus since the 2025 pilot program over a year ago. With Hach’s deeply discounted price tag, Lake Lovers is excited to purchase the DR3900 Spectrophotometer and the DRB200 Thermoreactor. The 2026 Monitoring Program will be piloting how to train volunteers to collect and store water samples for Total Phosphorus until samples can be run, ideally on a weekly basis in 2027, and our more skilled chemists and water quality professionals who also volunteer with Lake Lovers on how to use the equipment to run the tests. Lake Lovers will learn from this pilot how to improve our ability to offer this critical test to lakes in the 2027 Monitoring Program throughout the peak algae bloom season: June to September.
